Life Update
Hi, friends.
So, due to a series of unfortunate events, we are moving out of Fredericksburg. Fortunately, the one instance of good timing in this scenario is that my sister got offered a new job in Charlottesville, which is our hometown and where our immediate family still lives. Alex will start her new job in January, and I will continue to work both my jobs virtually. Hopefully we will be able to locate and secure a new apartment in the next few weeks.
I'm not going to lie; moving during a pandemic is incredibly stressful and terrifying. Where we live right now, nobody seems to be taking the potential for exposure seriously--we wear masks every time we leave the house, even for just walking to the mailbox, but I have never seen any of my neighbors wear one. We are doing our best to make sure our apartment hunting is kept virtual, and have already crossed a few options off our list because they were holding open houses (???). We think we have some good leads so far, though...honestly, I think I'll be stressed about it until it's all over and done with.
Both Alex and I are still working full-time from home, which is a blessing in this economy but also exhausting and time-consuming. Due to anxiety/depression, declining quality of sleep, and some other stuff, I feel far less productive than I aim to be, for both of my jobs. Guess I'm no longer the spring chicken I used to be, who could run on 4 hours of sleep. (I also volunteered to be an elf for job #1's virtual Santa visits program so that's a thing.)
Depleted energy has also taken a toll on my creativity. Most of the time I don't feel like writing, reading, etc. I haven't worked on my fiction project since August, and the stack of books on my bedside table got moved to the floor. It took me a month just to write this blog post, and it's not exactly riveting content.
Stage Door's production of As You Like It finished recording earlier this month, my first and only acting project of 2020. You can still get virtual tickets for $10 if you want to by clicking here. Online theatre is certainly a challenge, but playing Rosalind has always been a bucket list item for me. Fingers crossed I get to play her again someday in a live setting.
The plan was to start virtual bachata classes in mid-November, but even just watching the first basics class without following along felt overwhelming. My motivation goes toward work tasks and (some) household chores, and after that it feels like there's no energy left for anything else.
I did fold all of my laundry recently, so I guess there's that.
What else?
TV-wise, we're slooooowly making our way through two adaptations of the same drama in two different languages (one Thai, one Korean). There are only 16 episodes in both, but we've been so busy and mentally drained. Even though both versions are pretty good so far, we've been working on them for a couple of weeks and we're still not even halfway through...
We're also trying to fit in take-home only meals from our favorite local spots before we have to move. The ones we'll miss the most will probably be Ichiban (best chicken yaki ever), Perfect Pollo, VA Famous Teriyaki (the sweetest man who has never gotten our order wrong ever), Baba Ganoush, and El Asador (which is so close to our current home, we can literally walk to get pupusas). If you live in the Fred or Spotsy area, I highly recommend you try these places out--make sure you do take-out or delivery only so you don't get sick please!
We wish we could fit in face-to-face meetings with all our Fred friends before we go also, but it's just not possible with COVID running wild. Luckily online interactions are all the rage now; maybe it'll be like we never left. :)
Praying you all are doing okay during this painful and dangerous time. Hopefully once our (problematic but thankfully not Trump) new president and his administration is in office, our country can start moving in a less terrible direction.
