Mid-Year Goal Check-in

So remember how I posted my goals for 2023 in January? At the risk of realizing I haven't achieved as much as wanted to achieve...let's see how I've done in the past six months.

But first...life update!

June was a month of moving for me and my sister/roommate. Our moving week coincided with her being on a worktrip for 4 days and 3 nights. Luckily we were moving within the same neighborhood, so I was able to take most of our stuff over by myself while she was gone. Then when she came back on Friday night, we moved the heavier items and rented a U-Haul for the beds, futon (which some kind gentlemen carried up the stairs for us) and a shelving unit that didn't fit in her car. The week without her was also the week our state had "wrath-of-God" rain for three days straight, so that put a bit of a kink in my plans, but overall we made it happen. It's kind of funny that we're not even a mile down the road and the neighbor dynamic is night and day--our neighbors in the old place were very much of the "keep to yourself" variety, whereas in our new building they are super friendly.

While my sister was gone I was able to catch up on podcasts while packing/cleaning--"My Lips Aren't Sealed", "Prologues", and "The Refined Collective" are my favorites. At night, I binged XO Kitty on Netflix and Snapchatting her my reactions. When she came back, we ended up watching it again so she could get the ~full experience~. (Team Minho, by the way.) We also watched the 3 installments of the Surviving R. Kelly documentary, which I recommend.

Loooots of new music these days--I feel like everyone had a comeback this spring! Some of my new favorites are

  • "Take Two" by BTS
  • "Don't Say Love" by Leigh-Anne (from Little Mix)
  • "Reckless" and "Callin" by Avery Wilson
  • "See You Later" by The Band CAMINO
  • "I Hope I'm Not Sick" and "Control" by Loveless
  • "JOY (Unspeakable)" by Voices of Fire (yes I'm getting back into my gospel era!!!)
  • "Been That Boy" by BM and J.seph (from KARD)
  • "Bite Me" and "Sacrifice" by Enhypen
  • "Save Me, Kill Me" by CIX
  • "U" by iKON
  • "Asan Ka Na Ba" by Zack Tabudlo
  • "HOPELESS" by RAFA and Kameko
  • "Romeo & Juliet &" by SHIROSE(WHITE JAM)
Okay, now that the life-update rambles are through, let's see how I'm doing on those goals...

WRITING GOALS

"Keep writing, experiment more while writing, and finish the next phase of the ongoing project(s)."

Yeah...instead of finishing an already existing project, I started a new one that's particularly self indulgent instead. Whoops. I guess you could say that's experimenting, though?

READING GOALS

"Reach or exceed last year's numbers (17 books and/or plays)."

Check! I've read 19 books so far this year. Visiting the library regularly has helped a lot with this. Since my last reading wrap-up in May, I've shifted from nonfiction back to romantic-comedy fluff: The Donut Trap by Julie Tieu, Lunar Love by Lauren Kung Jessen, and By the Book by Jasmine Guillory. That said, I'm 50 pages into My Monticello by Jocelyn Nicole Johnson, so while we're still in fiction land, we have moved out of romantic-comedy fluff city for sure.

ACTING GOALS

"Audition at least 2-4 times this year and perform at least once."

So far I've auditioned once and performed in two readings and in a Youtube project, so we're moving along! I have two auditions coming up in July, so I should be able to hit the lower end of my audition goal for the year, God willing. Whether I perform or not is out of my hands, but it would be nice to act in a full-length play. Readings are fun, but require a different set of skills, and I'd like to sharpen as many tools in my actor's toolbox as I can before the year is out.

PERSONAL GOALS

"Complete two Shine classes this year."

Halfway through one and a third of the way through the other--need to focus more time/energy on these so I can finish before the end of the year.

"Initiate more contact with friends, especially ones who live far away."

Always need to be better about this--I love my friends dearly and I don't do nearly enough to show it. A small group of us did have a Facebook video call the other week to catch up and that was lovely.

"Be a better employee at both of my jobs."

I've taken on new responsibilities at my 9-5 that have helped me improve, but I wouldn't say I'm satisfied with my progress. I need to improve my time management skills, expediency, and my brevity in emails.

"Walk 4+ miles a day, 6 days a week."

Honestly...I was absolute garbage about this from January through April. My step averages for those months are in the 8,000-9,500 daily range, which is not at all where I want to be. I made an effort to take extra walks in May & June to make up for that. If I exceed this goal for the next few months, maybe it will even out by the end of the year?

"Continue to post a blog post once a month (or more)."

So far so good!

"Try new foods."

Haven't done as much of this. My uncle shepherded our family through our first experience trying Korean food at Umma's downtown, and my sister did take me on a little day trip to Harrisonburg recently to get a quesadilla from a food truck there that was absolutely DIVINE. Hopefully now that the moving season is over we can expand our horizons. Word on the street is El Tako Nako has a storefront open now--if you're from Charlottesville, you know.

"Research and implement new ways to live more sustainably."

Need to work more on sustainability initiatives. I have maintained current habits (reusing packaging that I've hoarded for years as packing material for our move in June, turning unusable cloth items into rags, etc). but I've been slacking in certain areas and need to pursue growth in other ones.

So overall, not as bad as I thought! Lots to work on for sure, but also on track on several points. Let's see what the rest of the year brings. :)
