Ten 2000s Bops Everyone Forgot About

We all remember the classics: "Since U Been Gone", "A Thousand Miles", "If I Ain't Got You".  But what about the bops we burned off of iTunes onto CDs and then forgot about years later? Let me take you on a journey, my friends, and be prepared to seriously judge my musical taste along the way:

1. "Fill Me In" by Craig David (2000)

Before this goes any further, you should know: this is one of my top five songs of all time and I never get tired of it. It is the boppiest bop, the jammiest jam. Timeless, effortless, the perfect karaoke song. If ever I were to get famous and be asked to be on Lip Sync Battle, this would be the song I'd choose.

2. "First Date" by Blink 182 (2001)

If you didn't watch hundreds of fan-made videos of your favorite TV show pairings to this song, you're lying. If you don't know who Blink 182 is, you're either lying or I'm old.

3. "Can I Go Now" by Jennifer Love Hewitt (2003)

Yes, the JLo before JLo gave music a whirl before she was the Ghost Whisperer. The video makes no darn sense, but nothing screams 2000's fashion like low-riding jeans and a baby tee, so it definitely gets points for nostalgia. Are the lyrics and vocals top notch? Admittedly no, but the angst-y, slightly bratty but still the "cool girl" vibe smacks of the early days of P!nk and Avril Lavigne, and that's what really spoke to me as a youth. (When you're a shy and anxious kid trying to figure out the "right" way to exist in the world, a song that hinges on not giving an eff can be really therapeutic).

4. "Come Back to Bed" by John Mayer (2003)

Listen, I love "Slow Dancing In a Burning Room" as much as anybody, but if you want the same "waltzing the kitchen at 2am" feeling without the crushing heartbreak, this song is the perfect fit.

5. "My Boo" by Usher ft Alicia Keys (2004)

The Usher song you were too embarrassed to admit you liked, so you played it alone in your room while decluttering all the papers from Social Studies at the end of the school year. So, so, SO 2004, y'all.

6. "5:19" by Matt Wertz (2006)

We've now traveled to the other side of the 2000s music spectrum: the rainy day chill, vaguely wedding-songish, "coffee shop" vibe popularized by Norah Jones, Ryan Cabrera and Colbie Caillat. Not gonna lie, this song is timeless and I still listen to it on the reg. Also, the singer kinda looks like the love child of Logan Reese and Chase Matthews from Zoey 101 and ain't that just a throwback.

7. "Walk Away" by Paula Deanda (2006)

WHAT HAPPENED TO PAULA DEANDA AND WHY DIDN'T SHE BLOW UP??? First of all, her voice is beautiful, and second of all, her aesthetic is like the perfect combination of the Bring It On sequel with Hayden Panettiere and season 4 of America's Next Top Model (both iconic elements of the 2000s).

8. "Runaway Love" by Ludacris ft Mary J Blige (2006)

THE MOST HEARTBREAKING VIDEO IN THE WORLD. Oh my gosh, I always felt bad bopping along to this jam because it was super catchy but the stories being told were so sad...also points for baby Keke Palmer.

9. "Do It Well" by Jennifer Lopez (2007)

Ok, first let me say: I have no idea what is happening in this video. Where are we? Why are the women acting like hamsters? When did musicians stop doing dance breaks in the middle of their songs? Regardless, the beat is catchy and it's nice to see the non-Hewitt JLo giving us her best Olivia Benson impression as she punches out creepy bald guys and saves a little boy from doing dishes in a closet.

10. "Mr. Right" by Rocket to the Moon (2009)

Gosh, I really miss that pseudo-punk/bowling alley-emo aesthetic boy bands had in this decade. As do the hair gel companies, I imagine. It's like the hair bands of the 80's reimagined...anyway, this song is still super fun to yell along to without sounding too aggressive, so 10/10 recommend if you're looking for a different kind of throwback.

What 2000s jams do you still love?
